Staff note: Fans of the HBO series Game of Thrones will recognize Jason Momoa, who stars as Conan. They probably know him better as Khal Drogo, the Dothraki warlord. [Want to read the Game of Thrones series?]

Staff note: Buzz about this remake picked up when Dr. Who star David Tennant joined the cast.

Carolyn: While the name Andy Serkis may be familiar, movie watchers would have a hard time picking him out of a line-up.  Serkis is known for playing Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (and upcoming Hobbit films) and was the giant ape in Peter Jackson's King Kong. In Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Serkis plays the lead ape Caesar.

Russ: I have no shame about how much I love Will Smith movies. Wild Wild
West
is a totally ridiculous, totally charming example of the
(admittedly small) sci-fi/western genre. I have to put this on every
once in awhile just to marvel at what a weirdly high-concept movie it is. Was this the start of steampunk?

Carolyn: And another movie based on a comic this summer. Hype for this one has been intense, and Favreau had good luck with his last comic movie, Iron Man. Check out the original source material and see how it matches up.

Carolyn: Steve Carell is no stranger to the father/children relationship movie -- Dan in Real Life explores that issue as well. And fans of Marisa Tomei will be happy to see her make an appearance.

Russ: Even Dwarfs Started Small is a 1970 Werner Herzog film with an entire cast of actual dwarfs. According to IMDB it is a deep allegory about the nature of rebellion. I'm sure this is also the case with the new Smurfs movie. Look for this one in our foreign language section. (Disclaimer: Unlike the new Smurfs movie, you should probably wait until the kids are in bed before watching Even Dwarfs Started Small.)

Another offering from the comic-to-movie bin, though this one ranks above most. Check out our previous picks for comic movies, and keep your eyes peeled for more Captain America in The Avengers next summer.

Does this movie look familiar? No Strings Attached, also released this year, had a very similar premise.

We must recommend the ultimate horrible boss film, 9 to 5.

Do you want to:
Watch something with Shia LaBeouf?

Watch something with Josh Duhamel?

Watch more by Michael Bay?

Watch the other Transformers movies?

Staff Picks
Those of us who grew up watching the Transformers cartoon may also be interested in G.I. Joe -- another cartoon and toy franchise adapted for the big screen. With silly lines and big action, the sequel (coming out in 2012) looks to provide more of the same.

Do you want to:
Watch something with Tom Hanks?

Watch something with Julia Roberts?

Staff Picks
Tom Hanks co-wrote this film with Nia Vardalos, star and author of My Big Fat Greek Wedding. She was also in My Life in Ruins, which looked to take advantage of Wedding's success but didn't quite meet it. Watch both and be the judge.

Staff Picks
Also appearing in Monte Carlo is Glee star Cory Monteith. Not your style? Try the classic To Catch a Thief with Cary Grant and Grace Kelly with stunning shots of the city.

It's hard to pick our favorite Pixar films, but you can't go wrong with the collection of Pixar shorts. If you've ever seen a Pixar film in the theater, you may have seen one of these right before the movie.

Bad Teacher also stars Jason Segal as another romantic interest. We've been fans of Jason Segal since we first saw him as goofy Nick in Freaks and Geeks. His face is more familiar now that he's shared the lead with Paul Rudd in I Love You, Man and a series regular on How I Met Your Mother. Look for him in this fall's The Muppets.

Staff Picks
Movies based on comics tend to divide their audiences -- some love them, some hate them. Here are a few of our favorites: Spider-Man 2; X-Men; A History of Violence; Iron Man; Batman: The Dark Knight.

Staff picks
For more animal hijinks, consider Dr. Dolittle. If it's penguins that you love, check out animated ones in Happy Feet and real ones in The March of the Penguins. Or you could skip the movies and read the book that this film is based on -- Mr. Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater.

Do you want to:

Watch more by J.J. Abrams?

Watch something with Elle Fanning?

Watch something with Kyle Chandler?

Staff Picks
It's hard to ignore the obvious choices of E.T. and The Goonies for this one. For something a little less family-oriented, try Abrams' other handheld shaky-cam thriller, Cloverfield

Staff Picks
Some children's and young readers' books have been adapted into great movies. We're fans of How to Eat Fried Worms and The Chronicles of Narnia series. For older kids, Coraline will send shivers down their spines and Flipped will warm their hearts.
